At some point in everyone’s life, we ask ourselves, “Am I happy?”. Emotions are unique characteristics of humans. Not all animals have emotions and they don’t have same range of emtions like humans.
So, it’s a natural question to ask yourself. But, what’s the answer?
Wikipedia defines happiness in the following way:
Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgements by a person about their overall well-being.
When answering the question for myself, I often think about things on the following list:
- Being married makes me happy.
- Having kids makes me happy.
- When my wife is happy, I’m happy.
- When my kids are happy, I’m happy.
- Having a nice house makes me happy.
- Having a good job makes me happy.
- Helping others makes me happy.
And, the list goes on.
So, how do you define happiness? Think about what’s important to you and how they make you feel. Chances are, if you’re not thinking about them, you’re probably happy.
Next, how do we stay happy? Take time, daily, weekly or monthly to think about or meditate on the things that make you happy. If you’re not happy, figure out what needs to happen to become happy and develop a plan to accomplish those objectives.
Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we were all happy?
